The 2017 Global Risk Report released by the World Economic Forum earlier this year showed that the environment is the core risk in the global risk landscape, and has failed to adjust and mitigate climate change risks, making it one of the high probability and significant risks in the survey for the first time. At the Summer Davos "Strategic Dynamics: Energy Systems" sub forum held on June 27th, attendees believed that as an important factor affecting climate change, energy should accelerate its transition towards cleanliness, which cannot be achieved without the dual guarantee of energy technology and national policies.
"The current energy market is in a transitional stage. In 2016, global renewable energy achieved a significant growth of 60%, coal consumption decreased for two consecutive years, and overall carbon emissions remained unchanged. Such data indicates that we have made progress in energy control," said Yang Xiaoping, President of BP (China) Investment Co., Ltd.
Behind the improvement of data is the progress of renewable energy technology and the continuous decrease in costs. John Carrington, CEO of Stem Inc. in the United States, stated that scale is an important factor in reducing costs, and the cost of many new energy technologies is rapidly decreasing. With the changes in the efficiency of electric vehicle use, the market for the use of secondary energy will be very important within 2 to 3 years.
Although renewable energy is becoming increasingly important, it still remains at a disadvantage in competition with traditional energy. "In order to meet the provisions of the Paris Agreement, we need to take more actions, such as increasing the proportion of natural gas and renewable energy use, further improving energy efficiency, and enhancing investment in innovative energy companies to help commercialize their energy technologies." Yang Xiaoping believes that technological innovation will be an important means to enhance the competitiveness of clean energy.
